Closing a TRN takes as much care as opening one
You must apply to deregister within 20 business days of stopping taxable supplies, or of your taxable supplies falling below the AED 187,500 voluntary threshold. Between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000, deregistering is usually your choice. Until the FTA approves the application you stay registered, returns keep falling due, and approval will not come while any return is missing or tax and penalties remain unpaid.
Smartgic sequences the whole exit. We confirm which test applies and the date it was met, file the deregistration application on EmaraTax with the supporting evidence, and prepare your final return — including VAT that may be due on stock and assets you still hold. Where the company is closing, we line the VAT deregistration up with corporate tax deregistration and the licence cancellation, so no registration is left open behind you.

What you gain with VAT Deregistration
The practical difference when the work is planned and filed properly the first time.
Right Test, Right Date
We establish whether deregistration is mandatory or optional and the date the condition was met, because that date starts the 20-business-day clock.
On-Time Application
Applying within the window avoids a late-deregistration penalty, and keeping returns filed in the meantime avoids late-filing penalties too.
A Clean Final Return
Your last return covers every supply up to the effective date, including any VAT due on business assets you keep after trading stops.
Account Cleared for Approval
Outstanding returns are filed and tax and penalties settled or reconciled, since the FTA will not approve deregistration while anything is open.
Tax Groups Handled
If one member leaves or stops trading, we amend the tax group rather than closing it, and confirm who files the group’s remaining returns.
Closure in the Right Order
VAT deregistration, corporate tax deregistration and licence cancellation are sequenced together, so one step does not stall the others.
A clear process, step by step
One adviser owns your file from first call to completion, and you always know which step you are on.
- 01
Eligibility & Date Check
We review your supplies and plans to confirm whether deregistration is required or optional, and the date the condition was met, which sets the 20-business-day deadline.
- 02
Account Clean-Up
We file any outstanding returns, reconcile your EmaraTax balance and arrange settlement of VAT and penalties due, so nothing blocks the application.
- 03
Deregistration Application
We submit the deregistration application through EmaraTax with the reason, the supporting evidence — such as a licence cancellation or turnover records — and the requested effective date.
- 04
Final Return & Approval
We answer FTA queries, file the final return to the effective date including any VAT on retained assets, and confirm once the FTA approves the deregistration.

VAT Deregistration questions
Straight answers to what clients ask us most. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
You must apply within 20 business days of stopping taxable supplies, or of your taxable supplies falling below the AED 187,500 voluntary threshold. If your supplies are below the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold but above AED 187,500, you may be able to deregister by choice, although a business that registered voluntarily must first complete a minimum period of registration.
No. Your TRN stays active until the FTA deregisters it — normally on your application — and returns keep falling due in the meantime. Licensing authorities, banks and liquidators may also ask for proof that tax registrations have been closed. Cancelling the licence first and dealing with the TRN later is a common cause of late-filing penalties, so we sequence the steps together.
All supplies and purchases up to the effective date of deregistration, plus any adjustments. VAT may also be due on business assets and stock you still hold at that date if you recovered input tax on them. Any tax due must be paid before the FTA completes the deregistration, so we calculate it in advance.
A member does not deregister separately. Instead, the representative member applies through EmaraTax to remove it from the group — for example, when it is sold, stops trading or no longer meets the conditions. The remaining members continue under the group TRN, and the departing company may need its own VAT registration if it still makes taxable supplies.
Apply as soon as possible. A late-deregistration penalty can apply, and you remain responsible for filing returns until the FTA deregisters you. We file the application, bring any missing returns up to date and calculate what is outstanding, so the account can be closed rather than continuing to build up penalties. Penalty amounts are set by the authority; we confirm the current figures for your case.
If the business is closing, yes — they are separate registrations. The corporate tax deregistration application is due within 3 months of the business ceasing — whether it stops trading, is liquidated or is dissolved — and needs all corporate tax returns filed and liabilities settled. A business that is only dropping below the VAT threshold stays registered for corporate tax. We run both deregistrations together when a company closes.
