Excise follows the goods — through every import, release and stock count
Excise tax applies to specific goods in the UAE: tobacco and tobacco products, electronic smoking devices and liquids, energy drinks, carbonated drinks and sweetened drinks. Importers and producers of these goods must register with the FTA, as must businesses stockpiling them above the threshold and warehouse keepers in designated zones. Because excise falls due at specific points — import, production, release from a designated zone — weak stock records and misclassified products are where unexpected liabilities usually start.
Smartgic confirms which of your products are excise goods and which registration obligations you carry, then handles the FTA registration and any designated zone or warehouse keeper requirements. We prepare your excise returns and declarations from reconciled stock and sales data, run excise health checks on past filings and stock movements, and support you through FTA audits with the records, reconciliations and explanations the FTA asks for.

What you gain with Excise Tax Services
The practical difference when the work is planned and filed properly the first time.
Products Classified Correctly
We confirm which of your products fall within excise categories — for example, whether a drink counts as an energy, carbonated or sweetened drink.
Registration Obligations Clear
Importer, producer, stockpiler and designated zone obligations are mapped to your actual activities, so you register for what applies and nothing else.
Returns From Reconciled Stock
Each excise return is built from stock, production, import and sales records that reconcile with each other, not from estimates.
Designated Zone Controls
Movements into, out of and between designated zones are documented and declared, so stock held under suspension stays properly accounted for.
Past Filings Checked
Excise health checks test past returns, declarations and stock movements, so errors can be corrected through a voluntary disclosure before an audit.
Audit-Ready Records
When the FTA audits, your stock reconciliations, declarations and supporting documents are already organised, and we help you answer its questions.
A clear process, step by step
One adviser owns your file from first call to completion, and you always know which step you are on.

Excise Tax Services questions
Straight answers to what clients ask us most. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Tobacco and tobacco products, electronic smoking devices and tools, the liquids used in them, energy drinks, carbonated drinks and sweetened drinks. Whether a particular product falls into a category depends on its ingredients and characteristics, so drinks in particular should be checked product by product. Rates and the basis of calculation are set by the authorities and have changed over time, so we confirm the current treatment for each product.
You must register if you import excise goods into the UAE, produce them here, stockpile them above the threshold, or operate a warehouse in a designated zone where excise goods are held. Businesses that only buy goods locally on which excise has already been paid, and sell them on, are generally not required to register. We review your activities and confirm the position before you apply.
A designated zone is a fenced, controlled area — usually within a free zone — that has been specifically designated for excise purposes. Excise goods held there can be under tax suspension until they are released into the UAE market, at which point excise becomes due. Warehouse keepers in these zones must register and keep detailed records of goods entering, leaving and moving between zones.
Registered businesses file excise returns through EmaraTax for each tax period, reporting the excise goods released for consumption, imported or produced, and any deductible excise, and pay the tax by the statutory deadline. Separate declarations apply to certain movements, such as goods entering, leaving or moving between designated zones. Accurate returns depend on stock records that reconcile with production, purchases and sales.
In some cases. Where excise has been paid on goods that are then exported, or used to produce other excise goods, the excise may be deductible or refundable, subject to the conditions and evidence the FTA requires. The export evidence and stock records need to line up, which is a common weak point. We assess what is claimable and prepare the supporting file.
We review a sample of past returns and declarations against your stock, production, import and sales records, check product classification and the basis used to calculate excise, and test designated zone movements and any deductions claimed. You receive a list of findings with the tax effect, and we prepare voluntary disclosures where errors need correcting.
